The Hepatitis B and C screening campaign in Lamu County continued into its second day, with the focus shifting to the part of the process that determines whether a screening programme translates into treatment: molecular confirmation.
Processing on site
Samples collected across the campaign’s outreach points are being extracted and analysed on site by our joint EQPAL Medical and REME-D technical team, using REME-D’s automated nucleic acid extraction systems and real-time PCR platforms deployed directly at the campaign base.
This arrangement is not standard practice for outreach screening, and the reason it matters is practical rather than technical.
In a conventional outreach model, rapid screening is carried out in the community while any samples requiring confirmation are transported to a central laboratory — often in another county. Results return days or weeks later, by which time contacting the patient may no longer be possible. People move. Phone numbers change. Those who travelled to a mobile clinic once may not return.
Processing confirmation on site closes that gap. A patient who screens positive can be confirmed, counselled, and referred into the treatment pathway within the same campaign window.
The operational picture
Day two’s work involved sample registration and labelling, nucleic acid extraction, PCR setup for both HBV and HCV panels, and result verification — carried out by a joint team of Kenyan and Egyptian laboratory scientists working side by side.
The equipment running these confirmations is the same technology on which our teams trained healthcare workers earlier this year, in the certified programme delivered with the Ministry of Health and NASCOP. The intent has always been that the capability remains in the county after the campaign vehicles leave.

The campaign continues across further sites in Lamu and Mombasa counties in the coming days.

Taking Hepatitis Screening to Where People Are: EQPAL Medical Supports Ministry of Health Campaign in Lamu and Mombasa
EQPAL Medical, as exclusive agent for REME-D in Kenya, is supporting an ongoing five-day Hepatitis B and C screening campaign across Lamu and Mombasa counties — part of the Ministry of Health’s programme to work towards the elimination of viral hepatitis in Kenya.
The campaign is being delivered in collaboration with the health departments of Lamu and Mombasa County Governments, together with Ministry of Health institutions including the National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP) and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
Reaching beyond the clinic
The defining feature of this campaign is not its scale but its reach.
Screening has been conducted at Hindi Health Centre, community dispensaries, and the Lamu County Blood Transfusion unit — and, working alongside the county’s TimamyCare mobile clinic, at sites well beyond the reach of any permanent diagnostic facility.
Among the sites visited was Hindi GK Prison.
That inclusion carries particular significance. Incarcerated populations worldwide carry a disproportionately high burden of Hepatitis B and C, driven by a combination of transmission risk factors and limited access to preventive care. They are simultaneously among the least likely groups to be reached by routine screening programmes.
A campaign that operates only from established health facilities will, by design, never find them.
Why elimination demands outreach
The World Health Organization’s target for viral hepatitis is not reduction. It is elimination as a public health threat.
Meeting that target rests on a single operational challenge: the majority of people living with hepatitis B or C do not know they are infected. They have no symptoms, no reason to present at a clinic, and no diagnosis on record.
Finding them requires taking diagnostics to where they are — to dispensaries in remote settlements, to mobile clinics, to prisons — rather than waiting for them to arrive at a laboratory.
That principle is what shaped these five days.
EQPAL Medical’s role
As exclusive agent for REME-D in Kenya, EQPAL Medical’s contribution centres on diagnostic capability: ensuring that the screening and molecular confirmation technology deployed in the field is available, supplied, supported, and operable under real conditions — in mobile clinics, in facilities with limited infrastructure, and in locations hours from the nearest laboratory.
Diagnostic technology that cannot travel, or cannot be sustained once it arrives, contributes little to an elimination agenda. Making it work in the field is the task.

Why we are supporting this camp For a significant number of Kenyan families, the obstacle to healthcare is not awareness or willingness to seek treatment. It is cost, and it is distance. A free medical camp removes both barriers at once. For one day, in their own community, people who would otherwise defer care receive consultation, screening, and treatment from qualified professionals. But a camp is only as effective as its supply chain. Clinicians arriving without adequate medicines, diagnostic supplies, or functioning equipment cannot deliver on the promise the community was given. That operational layer is where EQPAL Medical’s contribution sits — ensuring the pharmacy is stocked, the equipment works, and the supplies last the full day. EQPAL Medical was proud to participate as a partner and sponsor of the 3rd Annual NCHI Charity Run, held on Sunday, 23rd August 2026 at The Hub Karen under the theme “Restoring Hope and Making Strides Against Cancer.”
Organised by the Needy Cancer Health Initiative in partnership with Decathlon and The Hub Karen, the event brought together runners, walkers, cyclists, and families for a day built around a direct and measurable cause: every KSh 3,000 registration covers one cancer patient’s SHA premium for six months.
A full team turnout
Our team was represented across the event. Colleagues took on the 10km, 20km, and 30km routes, and EQPAL Medical hosted a branded station on the grounds throughout the morning — engaging with runners, fellow sponsors, and members of the public.
The event also offered free cancer screening on site, alongside a full programme of walking, cycling, and family activities.
Building partnerships for cancer care
Beyond the course, the day provided valuable opportunities for engagement with other organisations working in oncology care.
Among these, our team met with management from The Nairobi West Hospital to explore collaboration in supporting cancer patients — connecting EQPAL Medical’s oncology medicine sourcing and supply capability with the clinical services the hospital delivers.
Cancer care in Kenya depends on a chain of provision: timely diagnosis, access to oncology medicines, functioning treatment equipment, skilled clinical care, and the financial cover that allows a patient to access all of it. No single organisation holds every link. Events like this one create the space for the organisations that hold different parts of that chain to find each other.

EQPAL Medical, together with our partners at REME-D, recently delivered a technical lecture and equipment demonstration at a national public health institution, presenting the PseeR molecular diagnostics platform to laboratory staff, technical leads, and institutional leadership.
A full diagnostic panel
While much of our recent work has focused on hepatitis screening, the session presented the broader PseeR quantitative PCR portfolio — a panel designed to address several of the highest-burden infectious diseases in the region:

Each assay provides quantitative detection, supporting not only diagnosis but viral load monitoring and treatment response tracking.
From presentation to platform
The session was structured deliberately in two parts. The first covered the assay portfolio, detection methodology, and clinical applications. The second moved participants to the equipment itself — the automated nucleic acid extraction systems and real-time PCR platforms — for hands-on demonstration.
That second half is where the most valuable discussion took place. Laboratory teams raised the practical questions that specifications alone never answer: throughput under real caseloads, sample handling workflows, staff training requirements, consumable supply, and platform stability in local operating conditions.
Why this matters
Diagnostic capacity in East Africa is constrained less by the availability of technology than by whether that technology can be sustained. A platform that requires conditions a laboratory cannot maintain, or consumables it cannot reliably source, delivers little long-term value regardless of its technical performance.
This is why EQPAL Medical’s role extends past supply. At EQPAL Medical, our work is measured in shipments delivered, equipment installed, and hospitals supplied. But none of it happens without the people behind it — which is why we recently took a day away from the office for a full team building session.
A day outdoors
Our team traded warehouses, delivery schedules, and client calls for open grounds, group games, and a good deal of friendly competition. Structured activities ran through the morning, followed by group discussions and shared meals — an unstructured space for colleagues who normally interact over logistics updates to simply talk to one another.
Why we make time for this
Medical supply is an industry with little margin for miscommunication. A delayed shipment, a missed specification, or a breakdown between departments has consequences that reach patients. What prevents those failures is rarely a system — it is a team that communicates well under pressure, trusts one another’s judgement, and is willing to step in for a colleague without being asked.
That kind of working relationship is not built through process documents. It is built through time spent together.
A team drawn from many places

Field diagnostics ahead of World Hepatitis Day 2026
In the weeks leading up to World Hepatitis Day, EQPAL Medical and REME-D moved the campaign out of the conference room and into the communities where hepatitis most often goes undetected.
Working from local health facilities and a mobile laboratory unit deployed alongside KEMRI, our joint teams carried out community-based hepatitis screening using a two-stage diagnostic protocol.
A two-step approach to accurate results
Every participant received a rapid screening test on arrival — a fast, accessible first line of detection. Any sample returning a positive result was then confirmed on-site through molecular PCR testing, processed by REME-D’s field-deployable diagnostic platform.
This second step is what distinguishes the programme. Rapid tests are valuable for reaching large numbers of people quickly, but they indicate rather than confirm. PCR testing provides the definitive result that a clinician needs to begin treatment. In most community outreach settings, patients who screen positive must travel to a distant laboratory — and often wait weeks — before that confirmation arrives. Many never return.
By bringing molecular diagnostics directly to the point of care, participants received both screening and confirmation within a single visit.
Why it matters
Hepatitis B and C remain among the most under-diagnosed conditions across East Africa, in large part because diagnostic infrastructure is concentrated in urban centres. Late diagnosis narrows treatment options and drives avoidable liver disease and mortality.
Closing that gap requires more than awareness messaging. It requires diagnostic capability that can physically travel to underserved communities and operate reliably in field conditions — which is precisely the challenge REME-D’s molecular platforms are designed to address, and which EQPAL Medical’s distribution and logistics capacity across Kenya makes possible at scale.
Building on the work
The screening programme laid the groundwork for the World Hepatitis Day campaign that followed, which included a certified Scientific and Practical Training Programme delivered in partnership with the Ministry of Health, county government, and NASCOP — equipping local healthcare workers to operate the same molecular diagnostic technology independently.
Screening reaches people once. Trained healthcare workers with working equipment reach them for years.
