EQPAL Medical Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Programme at Mombasa Hospital EQPAL Medical was proud to support the Breast Cancer Awareness Programme held at Mombasa Hospital as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The programme Hosted in the Mombasa Hospital Board Room, the programme brought together healthcare professionals, breast cancer survivors, and invited participants for an afternoon of education, encouragement, and solidarity. Its purpose was threefold: to raise awareness of breast cancer, to promote early detection and timely treatment, and to celebrate and appreciate survivors for the courage and resilience they have shown through their cancer journeys. Why early detection is the message The clinical evidence on breast cancer is consistent and well established. A cancer identified at an early, localised stage carries survival outcomes dramatically better than the same cancer identified after it has spread. The difference between those two scenarios is frequently measured not in treatment sophistication, but in months of delay before a patient first presents. In Kenya, breast cancer remains among the most frequently diagnosed cancers in women, and a substantial proportion of cases are still identified at advanced stages. The reasons are well understood — the cost of consultation, distance from screening facilities, competing family and work obligations, limited awareness of what warrants investigation, and a natural human instinct to wait and see whether something resolves on its own. Awareness programmes address the part of that problem that information can address. The role of survivors The element of this programme that distinguished it was the presence and participation of survivors. Statistics describe risk in the abstract. A woman in the same room, from the same community, describing the symptom she nearly dismissed and the treatment pathway that followed, communicates something that no presentation achieves. Survivors are both the most credible advocates for early detection and the clearest evidence that a breast cancer diagnosis is not a conclusion. Celebrating them is not a courtesy addition to an awareness programme. It is central to why such programmes work. Mashujaa Day: Honouring Kenya’s Healthcare Heroes

Today Kenya marks Mashujaa Day — Heroes’ Day — in commemoration of those who struggled and sacrificed for the country’s independence and for the Kenya that followed.

It is a day of national remembrance, and rightly so.

At EQPAL Medical, it is also a day we take to recognise a particular group whose contribution rarely receives public commemoration: the healthcare workers serving Kenyan communities, often in conditions that would defeat most people.

The heroes we meet

Our work takes us into hospitals, county facilities, rural dispensaries, and mobile clinics across Kenya. The people we encounter there include:

The laboratory technologist running samples on ageing equipment in a county facility, improvising around shortages, because the alternative for the patient waiting outside is no diagnosis at all.

The nurse staffing a dispensary alone — triage, treatment, records, pharmacy, and reassurance — because the second position was budgeted and never filled.

The community health promoter covering kilometres on foot between households, finding the patients who will never present at a clinic because they cannot afford the journey or do not know they are unwell.

The clinical officer who stays well past closing because someone travelled a long way to be seen.

None of them will be named in a Mashujaa Day address. All of them will be at work tomorrow.

Why this matters beyond sentiment

Kenya’s health agenda is ambitious: universal health coverage, elimination targets for hepatitis and other communicable diseases, improved diagnostic and treatment access across all 47 counties.

These goals will be achieved, or not achieved, at the point of care — in the hands of the people described above. Policy provides the direction and the funding. Healthcare workers provide the delivery.

This is also why our work does not end at supply. Equipment that no one locally can operate, medicines that arrive after the need has passed, or platforms with no servicing support place additional burden on people who are already carrying more than they should. Making the system work for them is the task we set ourselves.

EQPAL Medical at the 8th KAMMP Scientific Conference

EQPAL Medical took part in the 8th Scientific Conference of the Kenya Association of Muslim Medical Professionals (KAMMP), held in Mombasa in partnership with the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA).

At the stand

Our team presented a portfolio spanning haematology and oncology support medicines, general and emergency therapies, and diagnostics — including REME-D’s molecular platforms and the PseeR assay range for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and tuberculosis.

Over the course of the conference we met with doctors, pharmacists, dentists, nurses, and laboratory professionals from across Kenya, along with delegates from the wider FIMA network.

The most useful conversations were, as always, the practical ones: clinicians describing what they struggle to source, and laboratory staff asking whether a given platform would hold up under their actual operating conditions. Those conversations shape what we bring into this market next.

Campaign Update — Day Three: Handing Over the Capability

The third day of the Hepatitis B and C screening campaign in Lamu County marked a shift in focus — from delivering diagnostics to transferring the ability to run them.

Training at the bench

County health workers and laboratory personnel from the Lamu County health department gathered around REME-D’s real-time PCR platform for hands-on instruction: sample loading, run setup, protocol selection, result interpretation, and troubleshooting.

The session was deliberately practical. Participants worked directly on the instrument rather than observing a demonstration, using the live campaign samples being processed that day.

Why this is the point

Outreach campaigns carry an inherent limitation. Teams arrive, equipment is deployed, patients are screened — and then the vehicles leave. Whatever diagnostic capacity existed in the county before the campaign is, in most cases, exactly what exists after it.

The alternative is to treat the campaign as a delivery mechanism for capability rather than a standalone event.

If county laboratory staff can operate the platform independently, order consumables through an established supply route, and access technical support when a run fails, then the diagnostic capacity survives the campaign. If they cannot, the equipment becomes an expensive object in a storeroom — an outcome common enough across the region to be worth naming.

This is why EQPAL Medical’s role extends beyond supply to servicing, maintenance, and training. A platform that no one locally can operate does not advance an elimination agenda, regardless of its specifications.
Building on earlier work

The training delivered on day three builds directly on the certified Scientific and Practical Training Programme our teams delivered earlier this year in partnership with the Ministry of Health and NASCOP, covering molecular diagnostic testing for Hepatitis B and C.

The intent across both is the same: that the counties we work in are more capable after we leave than before we arrived.

Campaign Update — Day Two: Confirmation Testing in the Field

The Hepatitis B and C screening campaign in Lamu County continued into its second day, with the focus shifting to the part of the process that determines whether a screening programme translates into treatment: molecular confirmation.

Processing on site

Samples collected across the campaign’s outreach points are being extracted and analysed on site by our joint EQPAL Medical and REME-D technical team, using REME-D’s automated nucleic acid extraction systems and real-time PCR platforms deployed directly at the campaign base.

This arrangement is not standard practice for outreach screening, and the reason it matters is practical rather than technical.

In a conventional outreach model, rapid screening is carried out in the community while any samples requiring confirmation are transported to a central laboratory — often in another county. Results return days or weeks later, by which time contacting the patient may no longer be possible. People move. Phone numbers change. Those who travelled to a mobile clinic once may not return.

Processing confirmation on site closes that gap. A patient who screens positive can be confirmed, counselled, and referred into the treatment pathway within the same campaign window.

The operational picture

Day two’s work involved sample registration and labelling, nucleic acid extraction, PCR setup for both HBV and HCV panels, and result verification — carried out by a joint team of Kenyan and Egyptian laboratory scientists working side by side.

The equipment running these confirmations is the same technology on which our teams trained healthcare workers earlier this year, in the certified programme delivered with the Ministry of Health and NASCOP. The intent has always been that the capability remains in the county after the campaign vehicles leave.

Taking Hepatitis Screening to Where People Are: EQPAL Medical Supports Ministry of Health Campaign in Lamu and Mombasa

EQPAL Medical, as exclusive agent for REME-D in Kenya, is supporting an ongoing five-day Hepatitis B and C screening campaign across Lamu and Mombasa counties — part of the Ministry of Health’s programme to work towards the elimination of viral hepatitis in Kenya.

The campaign is being delivered in collaboration with the health departments of Lamu and Mombasa County Governments, together with Ministry of Health institutions including the National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP) and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).

Reaching beyond the clinic

The defining feature of this campaign is not its scale but its reach.

Screening has been conducted at Hindi Health Centre, community dispensaries, and the Lamu County Blood Transfusion unit — and, working alongside the county’s TimamyCare mobile clinic, at sites well beyond the reach of any permanent diagnostic facility.

Among the sites visited was Hindi GK Prison.

That inclusion carries particular significance. Incarcerated populations worldwide carry a disproportionately high burden of Hepatitis B and C, driven by a combination of transmission risk factors and limited access to preventive care. They are simultaneously among the least likely groups to be reached by routine screening programmes.

A campaign that operates only from established health facilities will, by design, never find them.
Why elimination demands outreach

The World Health Organization’s target for viral hepatitis is not reduction. It is elimination as a public health threat.

Meeting that target rests on a single operational challenge: the majority of people living with hepatitis B or C do not know they are infected. They have no symptoms, no reason to present at a clinic, and no diagnosis on record.

Finding them requires taking diagnostics to where they are — to dispensaries in remote settlements, to mobile clinics, to prisons — rather than waiting for them to arrive at a laboratory.

That principle is what shaped these five days.

EQPAL Medical’s role

As exclusive agent for REME-D in Kenya, EQPAL Medical’s contribution centres on diagnostic capability: ensuring that the screening and molecular confirmation technology deployed in the field is available, supplied, supported, and operable under real conditions — in mobile clinics, in facilities with limited infrastructure, and in locations hours from the nearest laboratory.

Diagnostic technology that cannot travel, or cannot be sustained once it arrives, contributes little to an elimination agenda. Making it work in the field is the task.

EQPAL Medical at the 3rd Annual NCHI Charity Run

EQPAL Medical was proud to participate as a partner and sponsor of the 3rd Annual NCHI Charity Run, held on Sunday, 23rd August 2026 at The Hub Karen under the theme “Restoring Hope and Making Strides Against Cancer.”

Organised by the Needy Cancer Health Initiative in partnership with Decathlon and The Hub Karen, the event brought together runners, walkers, cyclists, and families for a day built around a direct and measurable cause: every KSh 3,000 registration covers one cancer patient’s SHA premium for six months.

A full team turnout

Our team was represented across the event. Colleagues took on the 10km, 20km, and 30km routes, and EQPAL Medical hosted a branded station on the grounds throughout the morning — engaging with runners, fellow sponsors, and members of the public.

The event also offered free cancer screening on site, alongside a full programme of walking, cycling, and family activities.

Building partnerships for cancer care

Beyond the course, the day provided valuable opportunities for engagement with other organisations working in oncology care.

Among these, our team met with management from The Nairobi West Hospital to explore collaboration in supporting cancer patients — connecting EQPAL Medical’s oncology medicine sourcing and supply capability with the clinical services the hospital delivers.

Cancer care in Kenya depends on a chain of provision: timely diagnosis, access to oncology medicines, functioning treatment equipment, skilled clinical care, and the financial cover that allows a patient to access all of it. No single organisation holds every link. Events like this one create the space for the organisations that hold different parts of that chain to find each other.

Expanding Diagnostic Capacity: EQPAL Medical and REME-D Deliver Technical Lecture at National Public Health Institution

EQPAL Medical, together with our partners at REME-D, recently delivered a technical lecture and equipment demonstration at a national public health institution, presenting the PseeR molecular diagnostics platform to laboratory staff, technical leads, and institutional leadership.

While much of our recent work has focused on hepatitis screening, the session presented the broader PseeR quantitative PCR portfolio — a panel designed to address several of the highest-burden infectious diseases in the region:

From presentation to platform

The session was structured deliberately in two parts. The first covered the assay portfolio, detection methodology, and clinical applications. The second moved participants to the equipment itself — the automated nucleic acid extraction systems and real-time PCR platforms — for hands-on demonstration.

That second half is where the most valuable discussion took place. Laboratory teams raised the practical questions that specifications alone never answer: throughput under real caseloads, sample handling workflows, staff training requirements, consumable supply, and platform stability in local operating conditions.

Why this matters

Diagnostic capacity in East Africa is constrained less by the availability of technology than by whether that technology can be sustained. A platform that requires conditions a laboratory cannot maintain, or consumables it cannot reliably source, delivers little long-term value regardless of its technical performance.
